Diode is a two-terminal electronic component used in electrical circuits to conduct electricity, mainly in one direction. It is also used to protect circuits by limiting the voltage, and also for transforming AC current into DC current. Semiconductors like silicon and germanium are commonly used for manufacturing diodes. Its two terminals are known as Anode or Positive Terminal, and Cathode or Negative Terminal. The conventional current moves from in the direction of Anode to Cathode. When the anode voltage is more positive than cathode voltage, the diode is called forward-biased. Likewise, when cathode voltage is more positive than anode’s, the diode is said to be reverse-biased.
There is a small drop of voltage in forward-biased diodes
Diodes are available in many forms, viz.:
Light Emitting Diode (LED): The diode will generate light when a sufficient amount of forward current passes through it.
Laser Diode: This diode produces coherent light, and is comparatively cheaper than other laser generators.
Zener Diode: Widely used in power supplies to get a reference voltage, these diodes are operated in reverse bias, and break down on the arrival of a certain voltage.
Avalanche Diode: This reverse bias diode operates using the avalanche effect. When voltage drop is constant and is independent of current, a breakdown of avalanche takes place.
Photo Diode: This reverse bias diode can identify even a small amount of current flow resulting from the light.
P-N Junction Diode: Also known as rectifier diode, it is used for the rectification process. One layer of the diode is doped with P-type material, while the other is with N-type material. The diode facilitates current in the forward direction, and blocks its flow in the reverse direction.
Schottky Diode: It has a lower forward voltage than other silicon P-N junction diode. Schottky diode is commonly used in rectifier applications.
